Everything you need for easy, controlled hand washing of wool, merino and other natural-fibre socks.

The Yarn Food Sock Hand Wash Set pairs our 300 ml Sock Wash with our drainable, fold-flat hand wash basin, giving you a simple, dedicated setup for washing natural-fibre socks by hand.

The basin’s drainable base lets you release the wash water neatly without tipping out the whole basin, making the process cleaner and more convenient. Once drained, you can gently press out excess water before transferring the socks to a towel.

Our low-foam Sock Wash cleans without repeated rinsing, while added lanolin helps condition animal fibres and maintain their naturally soft, supple feel. Tea tree oil gives the formula its crisp, clean fragrance.

Ideal for hand-knitted socks, merino walking socks, wool socks and other frequently worn natural-fibre favourites.

1. WHY YARN FOOD?

AN EASIER WAY TO HAND WASH
The drainable basin gives you a simple, dedicated space for washing socks by hand and lets you release the water neatly without tipping out the whole basin.

MADE FOR HARDWORKING NATURAL FIBRES
Sock Wash is designed for wool, merino and other natural-fibre socks that experience repeated wear, friction and washing.

WITH ADDED LANOLIN
Lanolin helps condition animal fibres and maintain their naturally soft, supple feel.

TEA TREE FRESHNESS
Tea tree oil gives Sock Wash its distinctive crisp, clean fragrance, making it particularly suited to frequently worn socks.

NO REPEATED RINSING REQUIRED
Sock Wash uses surfactants that loosen dirt from the fibres and suspend it in the wash water. When you drain the basin, the loosened dirt leaves with the water rather than settling back into the fibres. Because the formula is low-foaming, repeated rinsing isn’t needed.

This keeps the hand-washing process simple while allowing the conditioning ingredients to remain in the garment.

IDEAL FOR WET BLOCKING
Our roots are in knitting. The basin also provides a convenient space for giving handmade socks their first full wash and wet block before gently shaping them on a sock blocker.

FOLDS FLAT FOR STORAGE
Once you’re finished, the lightweight basin collapses down for easy storage until the next wash.

2. FRAGRANCE

A crisp, clean tea tree fragrance designed to leave frequently worn socks smelling fresh without being overpowering.

3. HOW TO USE

SOCK WASH — HAND WASHING

  • Open the basin and fill with 5 litres of cold to tepid water.
  • Add 3–6 pumps (5–10 ml) of Sock Wash.
  • Use 3 pumps / 5 ml for soft water.
  • Use 6 pumps / 10 ml for hard water.
  • Submerge the socks and leave to soak for 20 minutes.
  • Open the drain in the base of the basin and allow the wash water to run away.
  • Gently press the socks to remove excess water. Avoid rubbing, wringing or excessive agitation.
  • Transfer them to a clean towel, roll it up and press out further moisture.
  • Lay flat or block to dry.
  • There is no need for repeated rinsing.
  • Always follow the yarn ball’s or garment manufacturer’s washing and temperature instructions.

MACHINE WASHING

Our No-Rinse Washes are designed to nourish your garments as a hand-wash treatment. We therefore strongly recommend using the hand-wash method above, as the long-term conditioning effect of the added lanolin cannot be guaranteed when machine washing; repeated machine rinsing may progressively remove lanolin from the fibres.

If you still choose to use Sock Wash in the washing machine:

  • Use Sock Wash on a wool or delicate cycle, following the yarn ball’s or garment manufacturer’s washing and temperature instructions.
  • For particularly delicate, handmade or treasured socks, we recommend hand washing.

FAQs

Why does the water look darker after soaking my knit socks?

Please always test your yarns for colourfastness before washing. The natural cleaning agents in the formula will gently remove grime and dirt from your garment, which will be visible in the basin when you remove your item from the water. For very soiled socks, you can repeat the soaking process twice, or until satisfied with the outcome.

CAN I SOAK MY SOCKS FOR MORE THAN 20 MINUTES?

In most cases it is safe to soak your socks for longer than 20 minutes, however, we always recommend checking the care information of the yarn you’ve used and special requirements.

Can I use YarnFood in the washing machine?

Yes, you can use Yarn Food in the washing machine on a wool or delicate cycle. Add 15 ml, or 9 pumps, either directly into the machine or into the detergent drawer. Your garments will still be cleaned and fed, but some of the nourishment may be washed out in the rinsing process, which is why
the hand-wash and soak option is the preferred method for Yarn Food.
